Saturday, 21 May 2016: TRADITIONAL BRETON MUSIC with Anjela LORHO-PASCO (France)

TRADITIONAL BRETON MUSIC

led by Anjela Lorho-Pasco

Saturday, 21 May 2016

The Breton vocal world rests on three ancient pillars. There are long laments and epic ballads, "gwerzioù," and "soniù", religious hymns, "kantikoù", and, of course, singing for dancing, "kan ha diskan," in which two singers provide the rhythmic melody. Whilst in the religious songs we meet with the repercussions of the ecclesiastical musical practices that expanded throughout Europe, the old ballads retain their distinctive Celtic melody close to Irish and Scottish songs in Gaelic. The inimitable, riveting rhythmic pulsations of Breton gavottes and other circle and chain dances can be found nowhere else in the world.

Although, nowadays, Breton singers, often perform with bands of various forms, the deeply rooted tradition of singing without accompaniment is still alive and incredibly wide-spread. And it is this singing that we will focus on, in all of the above-mentioned forms.

Our guide will be a singer Anjela Lorho-Pasco, one of the best hopes of Breton scene. Do not expect you are going to sit only, the Bretan music includes a lot of movement and dance!

Anjela Lorho-Pasco

Anjela Lorho-Pasco is one of the Breton scene's significant hopes, though she does not restrict herself to traditional Breton style and also sings in French.

She has been singing ever since she was a young girl, and in the usual Breton manner – with her sisters, her broader family, and neighbours. Today, she is a member of several ensembles, for example the dance ensemble An Tri Dipop or the a cappella quartet Barba Loutig. She will currently be concerting in Prague with An Tri Dipop.

The workshop is produced in cooperation with Rond association.
