28 November – Old Christmas Carols – Zuzana VLČINSKÁ (CZ)

28 November 2010 (1st Advent Sunday)

OLD CHRISTMAS CAROLS

lead by Zuzana Vlčínská

The role of carols is to accompany us through the holy Christmas time, to experience Christmas as playfully as children do - spontaneously and truthfully. It is a ritual way of being present in the holy time and of meeting other people in the spirit of mutual generosity. Each carol has its own special way of presentation. Carol singers sing to somebody and expect a reward for their singing. Such gatherings have taken place through the centuries and were always merry announcements of the Birth of Jesus and brought new hope in the middle of winter. It may be the reason why we unconsciously feel the urge to sing together with others more often and in a different way than we do in the rest of the year. A large number of medieval and early-modern carols have been kept in hymn-books and manuscripts. Nevertheless, most carols come from the baroque era. Many songs and poems composed by the authors of that time have become popular, and it seems that folk art did not not lag behind with its beautiful lyrics and tunes, especially those born in Moravia.

Today we sing only about twenty of the hundreds of songs, ballads and carol chants that accompanied our predecessors through the holy Christmas time. This workshop has the ambition to enrich the repertoire and inspire singing carols together in the spirit of tradition.

The arrangements of Christmas carols by Zuzana Vlčinská inspire everyone to sing together without prior formal musical training.

Zuzana Vlčínská has a degree in musicology from the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and currently works as a lecturer. She specializes in singing and instructing folk songs with the general public. You can find more information about the lecturer HERE.
