31st December: SINGING IN THE NEW YEAR CIRCLE SONGS AND VOCAL IMPROVISATION led by David ESKENAZY (France)

Singing in the NEW YEAR CIRCle SONGS and VOCAL IMPROVISATION

led by David ESKENAZY (France)

Thursday 31 December, 16:00 - 00:05

Hlasohled will celebrate 10 years of its existence and this workshop is a small gift for our friends and supporters. Thank you for being here with us, without you we would not exist!

The fee for this workshop is exceptionally low: for those that have participated in any Hlasohled workshop over the last ten years it’s CZK 300 - plus something tasty for the buffet (preferably homemade :-), for all others it is (a symbolic) CZK 700 - plus something tasty.

We already know David Eskenazy - after the great workshop that he led in 2014, we are very pleased that he has come back to help us cross into the New Year in song.

David Eskenazy is a virtuoso jazz double bassist, but, above all, he has been working intensively with singing and the voice for many years. He has created his own method for teaching jazz vocal improvisation (more HERE) and its fame had already spread beyond the borders of France (for example the singer Rhiannon, who collaborates with Bobby McFerrin, recommends it to her pupils) and David teaches students via Skype in many countries around the world. The Prague workshop will be devoted to Circle Songs, which is a shape that is simple, so it is available to singers of all levels, but at the same time very powerful. As David says:

“Circle Songs are a simple, traditional form of singing, where the group stands in a circle, and passes round a basic theme. The individual singers then take turns at improvising on the basis of this theme. Circle Songs provide an ideal space for singing, one in which you can listen to yourself and the group, share with others and also explore your own sound improvisation. We will explore:

RHYTHM:

  • playing with onomatopoeia, working with the rhythmic phrasing
  • rhythmic stability within the group: how not to lose the beat when different rhythmic parts are around me
  • polyrhythmic singing: how to improvise and listen to the others at the same time

SOUND:

  •  working with dynamics when following soloists
  • composing areas and layers of sound under the leadership of the instructor to create a varied shape that holds together
  • examining the variety of the voice’s timbre - the goal is for singers to listen and realise the timbres of all the other voices at the same time without losing track of their own voice.

IMPROVISATION:

  • working with individuals’ improvisation on the basis of a group accompaniment
  • trying out different methods of group improvisation
  • the group will agree on the “rules of the game” and then creates its own songs

ATTENTION - the workshop is intended for a small group of just 14 participants! We recommend that you register in time.

Location:  Studio Naboso, Školská 12, Prague 1.

The price of the workshop is CZK 300 - plus something tasty for the buffet - for all those who have ever attended a Hlasohled workshop; for newcomers the price is CZK 700 plus something tasty for the buffet .

The workshop runs from 16:00 to 19:30 and from 21:00 to 00:05. There will be a break for a joint dinner. You can register with Hanka Blažková, produkce@hlasohled.cz, tel. 603 52 57 52.
