Imke McMurtrie is a singer and author and a breathing- and voice teacher. She studied pedagogy, music and theatre at the Universities of Berlin and Munich. From 1976 to 1982 she was a member of the Living Theatre (Judith Malina and Julian Beck, USA). She trained in body-awareness with Frieda Goralewski and Miriam Goldberg both in the tradition of Elsa Gindler. She met with the ensemble Mtiebi and Edisher Garakanidze at the festival for Sacred Voice in Wales in 1997. Ever since then she has been inspired by Georgian Harmony Singing as a tool of social harmonisation and healing. She is a voice coach for the music-therapy department at the State’s Conservatorio, “Hochschule für Musik und Theater” Hamburg and at the European Academy of Healing Arts in North Germany. Her work is to liberate the vibrational and resonatory capacity of the body through singing. She runs a private practice in Hamburg and international training courses in breathing and voice production and the healing power of ethnic singing. She gives solo concerts and is co-founder of the ethnic music-ensemble “Shen”.
